Palm Beach County Fair
The other day, we went to the fair, probably the first time for both of us since high school. Thanks to the great deals we get from Groupon and similar sites, we’re always able to try out new restaurants and activities in our area. A few weeks ago, we received an offer for BOGO admission to the Palm Beach County Fair. While the fair isn’t something we tend to frequent (as I’ve already mentioned), the promise of fried and over-sugared foods enticed us. Let’s do it!
And so, two nights ago we made the drive up to West Palm Beach for said county fair. It was a Wednesday, so not super-packed, which was nice since we never had to wait in line to get our icky food fix. It began with (I should forewarn you, the food I’m about to mention is neither healthy nor beneficial in any way whatsoever, and nothing we plan to consume ever again. We simply tried it for the sake of knowing what it tastes like, and have no desire whatsoever to consume the following products ever again, as our arteries are no doubt clogged to the high heavens and our chance of early heart attack has likely increased two fold. That said, everything was disgustingly good) the Krispy Kreme Burger. What’s that? you ask. Well, imagine two Krispe Kreme Original Donuts, sandwiched around a hamburger, lettuce, tomatoes and onion, and you have it. The mix of sweet and savory is great – you’re hitting several notes in one bite. As with everything consumed at the fair, we shared it.

Next up — a deep fried Milky Way. I’d heard of the deep fried concoctions and was anxious to try one! There was no disappointment. The fry on the outside is very donut-like, and of course the candy bar itself turned into this warm, ooey-gooey delight. I was happy to finish the last bite when Michael claimed he’d had his fill.

To continue the alternate savory/sweet rhythm, we moved on to a corndog. No, this wasn’t your ordinary corndog, but rather a “Giant Corndog”. Two regular sized hot dogs skewered and dipped into a thick batter were slowly fried to golden perfection. We went for the Giant one because 1) we were sharing, and 2) it had the “it” factor that the regular sized corndog was lacking. Accompanied by the classic Ketchup condiment, we showed that corndog who was boss.

We concluded our tour de fair cuisine with a deep fried Twinkie (yet another of the cult delights we were destined to try out). Perhaps our favorite, the Twinkie was doused in powdered sugar, light, fluffy and utterly scrumptious. This seemed the most guilt-free (to me), since it had the best texture of that evening’s indulgences, and the simplest. Yum.

After the grease began to settle, we started feeling the weight of our decisions and knew it was time to call it a night. Though a few shades greener than when we started our adventure, we had a fun time, but we’ll probably keep our distance from the fair for a few years to come.
