Chocolate Prayers Answered

Since I was a little girl, I’ve had memories of packages being sent over from my Great Grandmother in Germany, filled with lots of little goodies that could only be found overseas. Delicious gummy confections, beautiful little cakes and cookies, and of course… chocolate. Oh, sweet chocolate. There was Milka, Ritter Sport and Toblerone (all chocolates you can now get in the United States), and of course, my beloved Kinder. And so, my love affair with THE chocolate began.

I found out the other day that my wonderful cousin Myriam – - or is it my second cousin? – - was flying into Miami, we were determined to meet up with her for a short while. The last time we saw her was over the summer in 2009 while in Frankfurt, Germany. Before her flight, she asked if there were any Germany chocolates she could bring over for us… and half-heartedly I said, “Kinder is my favorite! But you don’t have to bring anything.” To my surprise, after being greeted with her warm and smiling face, she handed over a giant bag of chocolate!

As you’ll see from the photos, as I was eager to document the glorious gift, she was extremely generous! We’ll have chocolate for months, if we’re good… or maybe a week or two. All of the delicious varieties that make our mouths water are now sitting in our kitchen, waiting to be devoured, errr, savored.  Thank you, Myriam.  Thank you!

For any of you interested in trying out a new cocoa sensation, these chocolates can be found at a number of online retailers. Here are just a few: Malincho.com, GermanDeli.com, and ParthenonFoods.com.

Also, after thinking about it, I suppose Kinderschokolade is technically Italian since it’s manufactured by Ferrero, but it will always be German to me!
